Is 3/4 Bigger Than 7/8

Anonymous Profile

The fraction seven/8 is larger than the fraction iii/iv. There are two different ways yous tin can work out the relative sizes of 2 fractions - the mathematical way and the intuitive style, or common sense way.  Allow's wait at the "proper" or mathematical way first.

All fractions accept two parts; the number on top which is called the numerator and the role underneath which is chosen the denominator.

The first step when comparing two fractions is to find a common denominator - that means a denominator that both fractions can be reformulated into.  In the case given nosotros need to find a number that is divisible past both four and eight without anything left over, or no remainder.

Information technology's pretty obvious that both denominators will get into 8, so we'll use that as the common denominator. Next, we'll see how many times each denominator will go into the mutual denominator, and and then we'll multiply the numerator by that number.

For case, eight goes into eight one time.  One times vii is vii, then we take the aforementioned fraction we started with - vii/8.  The second fraction'south denominator is four and this goes into eight two times, and then nosotros multiply 3 ten 2 = 6.  So the second fractio , iii/iv,  can likewise be written as 6/8.

In words, we have once fraction of seven eighths, and we have a 2d fraction of six eighths.  Put like this, it's pretty obvious that seven eighths is the bigger of the two fractions.

There is also an intuitive or commonsense manner of looking at the same trouble.  That is to enquire yourself, is the denominator a large number or a pocket-sized number?  The bigger the denominator, and then the more parts the object in question (whether it's an apple or your weekly pay packet) is being chopped up into.  Equally there are more than parts, they must be minor - so there would accept to be a lot of them for the fraction to be a large 1.  Evidently, 1/100 must be a much smaller fraction than three/4 because there are so many hundredths and so few quarters.

3/4 equals 6/8, then yeah, 7/8 is larger than 3/four.

vii/8 is bigger than 3/4. Information technology is bigger by two more 1/16th's of an inch. In other words two more lines on a ruler after 3/4 is 7/8

If you get a mutual denominator (which is 8) and multiply the tiptop of 3 times 2 and four times to you get half dozen/8 so 7/8 is larger.

P.S.- I'grand in Grand&T so you can't say I'1000 wrong. G&T stands 4 gifted and talented
